Akkermansia: What the Research Shows, What It Doesn't, and What SlimTide's Label Leaves Out

Quick answer

Akkermansia muciniphila is a gut bacterium. The key human study was a 3-month pilot with 32 people taking about 10 billion pasteurized cells a day: insulin sensitivity improved, but the 2.27 kg weight difference was not significant. SlimTide lists Akkermansia in a 36 mg blend with no CFU count, and does not say whether it is live or pasteurized.

The basics

What is Akkermansia muciniphila?

Akkermansia muciniphila is a bacterium that lives in the gut's mucus layer. Researchers study it for insulin sensitivity and weight, but human data are still early.

SlimTide lists it as the third name in its 36 mg Probiotic Blend, next to Bifidobacterium infantis and Clostridium butyricum.

That placement matters. The label gives one weight for all three species together. It does not say how much of the 36 mg is Akkermansia. Our Akkermansia ingredient profile shows the label line in full.

The key study

What did the main Akkermansia human study find?

It found better insulin sensitivity, not significant weight loss. In a 2019 pilot, 32 adults with overweight or obesity who finished the study took Akkermansia or placebo for 3 months (Akkermansia pilot study (2019)).

Insulin sensitivityImproved about 28.6% versus placebo

The insulin result is interesting. The weight result, often quoted, did not reach significance (Akkermansia pilot study (2019)).

Limits

What does the Akkermansia research not show?

It does not show that an Akkermansia supplement causes weight loss. It also says nothing direct about SlimTide.

01

One small pilot

A single 3-month study with 32 completers is a starting point. Larger trials are needed before firm claims.

02

A different form

The reported results came from pasteurized cells. SlimTide's label does not say whether its Akkermansia is live or pasteurized.

03

A known dose

The pilot counted about 10 billion cells a day. SlimTide prints no count, so there is nothing to match.

04

Strains differ

A benefit from one strain does not carry over to another (NCCIH: probiotics safety). No strain code is printed on SlimTide.

The FTC adds that studies of single ingredients may not support claims for a combination product (FTC: health claims need trials). SlimTide mixes Akkermansia with two other species and two fibers, and no trial of that mix is published.

The label

Why does a missing CFU count matter for Akkermansia?

One capsule, drawn to scale. The probiotic blend is the smallest slice, and the only one with no meaningful count.

  1. 347 mg

Everything listed in one capsule: 211 mg of chicory root inulin, 100 mg of potato resistant starch and a 36 mg probiotic blend.

  2. 311 mg

Total fiber per capsule. Chicory inulin trials used a median of 10 g a day (Meta-analysis: chicory inulin and weight (2024), trade report), more than 30 times this whole amount.

  3. 36 mg

The probiotic blend is printed by weight only. NIH ODS notes that weight can include dead cells and that CFU is the useful count (NIH ODS: probiotics).

Each line per capsule, as printed

  • Chicory root inulin211 mg
  • Potato resistant starch100 mg
  • Probiotic blend (3 strains)36 mg, CFU not printed

Amounts from the Supplement Facts panel. The split between the three probiotic strains is not printed, so no strain gets its own bar.

A weight in milligrams does not tell you how many living microbes you get. NIH ODS says labels must list the total weight of microorganisms, which can include dead ones. Listing CFU, or colony-forming units, is voluntary, and it advises looking for CFU at the end of shelf life (NIH ODS: probiotics).

Experts agree. The ISAPP consensus says "probiotic" should mean products with defined strains and an adequate viable count at the end of shelf life (ISAPP: probiotic consensus (2014)). SlimTide names three species but gives no strain codes, no split and no count. The topic is covered in depth in probiotics, CFU and refrigeration.

Storage

Should you refrigerate a probiotic like SlimTide?

Yes, once it is open. The label says "Refrigerate for optimal quality", and the sales page says the fridge protects the probiotics after opening.

That fits the research. Probiotics can die during shelf life, and some need refrigeration (NIH ODS: probiotics). In a storage study, 4C kept bacteria alive better than 28C, and one of four products tested below its labeled count (Probiotic storage and viability (2018)).

NCCIH adds that some products contain microbes other than those on the label (NCCIH: probiotics safety). A printed count, checked at end of shelf life, is how you would know what is still alive.

The wider evidence

Do probiotics help with weight loss overall?

Only slightly, and not consistently. NIH ODS rates the effect of probiotics on body weight as inconsistent (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements).

For B. infantis and C. butyricum, the other two species in SlimTide, there is no weight trial of either species alone in our sources.

Safety

Is Akkermansia safe to take?

For some people, the risks rise. NCCIH says the risk of harm is greater with severe illness or a weakened immune system (NCCIH: probiotics safety).

Not for babies or children

In 2023 the FDA warned about probiotics given to hospitalized preterm infants, after one death and more than two dozen adverse events since 2018 (FDA: probiotics and preterm infants (2023)). SlimTide is for adults; keep it out of children's reach.

No drug interactions are listed in the sources we use. The label asks anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first.

What to ask

What should you ask before buying an Akkermansia product?

  1. How many cells per capsule?

Ask for the CFU or cell count at the end of shelf life, not at manufacture.

  2. Live or pasteurized?

The pilot's reported results came from pasteurized cells. The form should be stated.

  3. Which strain?

Ask for the strain code, so you can match it to any published study.

  4. How is the blend split?

For a shared blend, ask how much of the weight belongs to each species.

Our take

What does this mean for SlimTide?

Akkermansia science is promising but early. SlimTide names the species, which many products do not, and it asks for refrigeration. It does not say how much Akkermansia is inside or in what form, so the pilot's results cannot be applied to it.

FAQ

Akkermansia and SlimTide FAQ

What does Akkermansia muciniphila do?

It is a gut bacterium that lives in the mucus layer. In a 2019 pilot, about 10 billion pasteurized cells a day improved insulin sensitivity by about 28.6% versus placebo over 3 months. The weight change was not significant.

Does Akkermansia help you lose weight?

Not clearly. In the main human pilot, the 2.27 kg weight difference was not statistically significant (P=0.091), and the authors called the 32-person study exploratory and underpowered. Larger trials are needed before any weight claim.

How much Akkermansia is in SlimTide?

The label does not say. Akkermansia is one of three species in a 36 mg Probiotic Blend, with no split between species, no strain code and no CFU count printed. Ask the order desk for the count at end of shelf life.

Is the Akkermansia in SlimTide live or pasteurized?

The label does not say. The pilot's reported results came from pasteurized cells, so the form matters. Without it, and without a count, SlimTide's Akkermansia cannot be compared with the study.

Why is CFU better than milligrams on a probiotic label?

A weight can include dead microbes, while CFU estimates live ones. NIH ODS says CFU listing is voluntary and advises checking the count at the end of shelf life, since probiotics can die during storage.

Should Akkermansia supplements be kept in the fridge?

SlimTide's label says to refrigerate, and the sales page says to do so after opening. In one storage study, 4C kept bacteria alive better than 28C. Follow each product's label.

Who should not take Akkermansia?

Children should not be given it, and people who are seriously ill or have weakened immune systems face higher probiotic risks, according to NCCIH. Pregnant or nursing adults should ask a physician first, as SlimTide's label advises.
