Potato Resistant Starch in SlimTide: 100 mg and the Weight Evidence

Quick answer

Each SlimTide capsule lists 100 mg of potato resistant starch. The potato trial we cite used 30 g a day for 12 weeks, about 300 times more, and reported blood sugar results, not weight (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)). Two meta-analyses found little or no change in body weight from resistant starch (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)) (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)).

The basics

What is potato resistant starch?

Resistant starch is starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine. Because it is not absorbed like ordinary starch, it counts as a type of fiber.

SlimTide's label lists it as "Potato (Resistant Starch) (tuber)", 100 mg per capsule. It is the second line of the Supplement Facts panel, after chicory root inulin.

Researchers sort resistant starch into types. One review we cite looked only at type 2, often shortened to RS2 (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)). The label does not say which type SlimTide uses.

On the label

How much resistant starch is in SlimTide?

One SlimTide capsule lists 100 mg of potato resistant starch, and the label dose is one capsule a day. That is one tenth of a gram daily.

How does 100 mg compare with the 30 g potato trial?

It is about 300 times smaller. The potato trial gave people 30 g a day for 12 weeks (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)).

Each "Per day" bar is one capsule, drawn to scale; bars under 1% get a minimum width so they stay visible. The fibers are compared with amounts tested in trials, and with the small daily step NIDDK suggests when adding fiber. The probiotic blend has no bar: the label prints a weight (36 mg), not a CFU count, so there is nothing to compare.

The trial

What did the 30 g potato resistant starch trial find?

The trial found a modest drop in blood sugar in older adults and no significant change in mid-age adults (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)). Our source reports glucose and insulin results, not a weight result.

So the one potato-only trial we have was about blood sugar, used a large dose and was partly paid for by the company that sells the starch.

The evidence

Does resistant starch help with weight loss?

The reviews point to little or no effect. A 2025 meta-analysis found no significant change in body weight or BMI (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)).

01

2019 review of RS2

Across 6 studies and 216 people, RS2 lowered weight by 1.19 kg. Removing one study at high risk of bias cut that to 0.02 kg. There was no significant effect on HOMA-IR or fasting glucose (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)).

02

2025 review, 9 trials

Weight fell by 1.33 kg, but the result was not significant (95% confidence range -3.37 to 0.71 kg). Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR fell, with high variation between trials. Only one trial used potato alone (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)).

When one study drives a result and removing it leaves almost nothing, the honest reading is "not shown." That is how we describe resistant starch for weight. Studies of single ingredients also do not prove a combination formula works (FTC: health claims need trials).

Our post on the resistant starch evidence walks through both reviews in more depth.

Beyond weight

Does resistant starch affect blood sugar or insulin?

The results are mixed. The 2025 review found lower fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, but the trials varied a lot (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)). The 2019 review of RS2 found no significant effect on HOMA-IR or fasting glucose (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)).

The authors of the 2019 review called the short-term heart and metabolic benefit of RS2 limited. All of these results came from gram doses, not 100 mg.

If you manage blood sugar

Do not change any diabetes medicine or plan because of a supplement. The label asks anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first. See our medicines page too.

Comfort and fairness

Is potato resistant starch in SlimTide worth having?

It is a token amount of fiber, not an active dose. NIDDK says too much fiber at once can cause gas and suggests adding 2 to 3 g a day (NIDDK: IBS diet and fiber). At 100 mg, the capsule sits far below that step.

Pros

  • The amount, 100 mg, is printed on the label
  • Far below NIDDK's 2 to 3 g daily fiber step
  • The source plant, potato, is named

Cons

  • About 300 times less than the 30 g trial
  • Reviews find no clear weight change
  • The potato trial was co-funded by the ingredient maker
  • The type of resistant starch is not printed

What to do

What should you take from the resistant starch evidence?

Expect nothing measurable from 100 mg on its own. The studied amounts were grams, and even then the weight effect faded under scrutiny (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)).

  • Count the capsule's 311 mg of total fiber as a small extra
  • Build fiber from meals, slowly, if you want more
  • Lean on eating, activity and sleep, which NIH calls the basis of weight loss (NIH ODS: weight-loss supplements)

The other fiber in the capsule is profiled on our chicory inulin page.

FAQ

Potato resistant starch in SlimTide: FAQ

How much resistant starch is in SlimTide?

Each SlimTide capsule lists 100 mg of potato resistant starch, printed as "Potato (Resistant Starch) (tuber)". At one capsule a day, that is a tenth of a gram daily. With 211 mg of chicory inulin, the capsule's total fiber is 311 mg.

How much resistant starch was used in the potato study?

The potato trial used 30 g a day of potato-derived resistant starch for 12 weeks (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)). That is about 300 times the 100 mg in a SlimTide capsule. The trial was co-funded by the ingredient maker, MSPrebiotics Inc.

Does potato resistant starch help you lose weight?

The evidence does not show a clear weight effect. A 2025 meta-analysis found a 1.33 kg drop that was not significant (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)). A 2019 review of RS2 found 1.19 kg, which fell to 0.02 kg once one high-bias study was removed (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)).

What is resistant starch made of?

Resistant starch is starch that escapes digestion in the small intestine, so it acts like fiber. SlimTide's comes from potato tuber. The label does not say which type of resistant starch it is, such as RS2, the type one review studied (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)).

Does resistant starch lower blood sugar?

Results are mixed. In the 30 g potato trial, older adults had a modest glucose drop and mid-age adults had no significant change (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)). A 2019 review found no significant effect on fasting glucose (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)). None of this was at 100 mg.

Can resistant starch cause gas?

Large amounts of fiber added at once can cause gas, and NIDDK suggests adding fiber 2 to 3 g a day (NIDDK: IBS diet and fiber). SlimTide's 100 mg of resistant starch is far below that step. Gut effects from it are unlikely, though everyone reacts a little differently.
