Inulin and Fiber for Weight: What the Trials Used and What SlimTide Has
Chicory inulin trials found a small weight effect: about 0.97 kg more loss at a median 10 g a day across 32 trials, a result funded by a fiber supplier. A 12-week trial used 21 g a day. One SlimTide capsule holds 211 mg of inulin, roughly 47 to 100 times less, so food remains the real source of fiber grams.

The basics
What is inulin, and why is it linked to weight?
Inulin is a fiber from chicory root. You cannot digest it, so gut bacteria ferment it in the large gut. That makes it a prebiotic fiber.
Researchers study it for weight because it may affect hunger signals. In one 12-week trial, people taking oligofructose, a shorter inulin-type fiber, had lower ghrelin (a hunger hormone), higher PYY (a fullness hormone) and reported eating less (Oligofructose trial, 21 g a day (2009)).
SlimTide lists chicory root inulin first on its label, at 211 mg per capsule. With 100 mg of potato resistant starch, that makes 311 mg of fiber. The real question is how that compares with the studies. Our chicory inulin profile has the label details.
The research
Does inulin help with weight loss in trials?
A little, at gram doses. A 2024 review of 32 chicory inulin trials reported 0.97 kg more loss than control at a median 10 g a day (Meta-analysis: chicory inulin and weight (2024), trade report).
| Study | Daily dose | What was found |
|---|---|---|
| Chicory inulin review, 32 trials (2024) | Median 10 g | Reported 0.97 kg lower weight, 0.39 lower BMI and 1.03 cm smaller waist (Meta-analysis: chicory inulin and weight (2024), trade report) |
| Oligofructose trial, 48 adults, 12 weeks (2009) | 21 g | Lost 1.03 kg, while the placebo group gained 0.45 kg (Oligofructose trial, 21 g a day (2009)) |
| Resistant starch type 2 review (2019) | Varied | 1.19 kg, falling to 0.02 kg without one high-bias study (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)) |
| Resistant starch review, 9 trials (2025) | Varied | -1.33 kg, not statistically significant (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)) |
Put plainly, the best inulin result is about 1 kg, roughly 2 pounds. That is real but modest, and it came from 10 to 21 grams of added fiber a day.
The dose gap
How does SlimTide's 211 mg of inulin compare with trial doses?
Each bar shows one capsule next to an amount used in research, drawn to scale.
The gap is large. 10 g is about 47 times SlimTide's 211 mg; 21 g is about 100 times. Potato resistant starch shows the same pattern: the trial used 30 g a day (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)), about 300 times the capsule's 100 mg.
Even NIDDK's gentle fiber step-up of 2 to 3 g a day (NIDDK: IBS diet and fiber) is 6 to 10 times the capsule's 311 mg of fiber.
Who paid
Who funded the inulin weight research?
Industry paid for some key results. The inulin review was funded by the Beneo Institute, part of a chicory-fiber supplier (Meta-analysis: chicory inulin and weight (2024), trade report). The potato starch trial was co-funded by its ingredient maker (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)).
Funding does not make a study wrong, but it earns a second look. We read the inulin review through a trade-press report, so its 0.97 kg figure is reported. The 2009 trial found a similar effect size (Oligofructose trial, 21 g a day (2009)).
The FTC says ingredient studies may not support claims for a combination product (FTC: health claims need trials). SlimTide itself has no published trial.
The other fiber
What about potato resistant starch for weight?
The evidence is weaker than for inulin. Two reviews found little or no weight change. In one, a 1.19 kg drop nearly vanished when a single high-bias study was removed (Meta-analysis: resistant starch type 2 (2019)). In the other, the -1.33 kg estimate was not significant, and only one trial used potato starch alone (Meta-analysis: resistant starch (2025)).
The 30 g potato trial reported a modest glucose drop in older adults only, and no weight result (Potato resistant starch trial, 30 g a day (2018)). More in our post on resistant starch evidence.

Does inulin cause gas and bloating?
It can. In a trial of 26 healthy adults, native inulin was well tolerated up to 10 g a day. Gas was the top complaint, then bloating; 10 g of oligofructose caused more symptoms (Inulin tolerance trial (2010)).
In SlimTide's favor
- 211 mg of inulin is far below the 10 g found well tolerated.
- Both fiber amounts are printed, so you know exactly what you take.
Worth knowing
- Large gut effects are unlikely at this amount, but no one can promise none.
- If you have IBS, fiber of any kind can be touchy; ask your clinician.
NIDDK notes that too much fiber at once can cause gas (NIDDK: IBS diet and fiber). That matters more for food fiber than for one capsule.
Real grams
How can you get more fiber from food?
Build it into meals, a little at a time. Beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, oats and whole grains all supply fiber in grams, not milligrams.
Read the Nutrition Facts panel
Packaged foods list fiber in grams per serving. See what you already eat.
Add 2 to 3 grams a day
Raise your fiber in small steps, as NIDDK suggests, to give your gut time to adjust (NIDDK: IBS diet and fiber).
Swap, do not just add
Trade white bread for whole grain, or add beans to a soup you already make, with a glass of water.

We do not list grams per food because our sources do not give them; each food label does. More habits: the gut health guide.
Our take
Is SlimTide a good way to get inulin for weight?
Not if dose is the goal. SlimTide is a small daily dose of two prebiotic fibers plus a three-strain probiotic blend whose count is not printed. Its fiber is about a third of a gram.
It has fair points: one capsule a day, clear amounts, no stimulants and a 60-day guarantee. For inulin's studied effect, look to food.
FAQ
Inulin, fiber and SlimTide FAQ
How much inulin a day is used for weight loss in studies?
A 2024 review of 32 trials reported a median dose of 10 g a day of chicory inulin-type fiber. A 12-week trial used 21 g a day of oligofructose. Both are grams, far more than the 211 mg in one SlimTide capsule.
How much weight can inulin help you lose?
Not much. The 32-trial review reported about 0.97 kg, roughly 2 pounds, more than control, with funding from a chicory-fiber supplier. In the 21 g trial, people lost 1.03 kg while placebo gained 0.45 kg.
Is 211 mg of inulin enough to do anything?
No trial we know of tested about 200 mg of inulin a day for weight. The studied doses were roughly 47 to 100 times higher. At 211 mg, SlimTide's inulin is a very small amount, which also makes strong gut effects unlikely.
Does inulin cause bloating?
It can. Gas is the most common symptom, then bloating, though native inulin was well tolerated up to 10 g a day in one trial. Adding fiber 2 to 3 g a day may help.
What foods are high in fiber?
Beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, oats and whole grains supply fiber in grams. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on packaged foods for the grams per serving, and raise your intake by 2 to 3 grams a day.
Can I take SlimTide with a fiber supplement?
None of our sources lists a problem, but more fiber at once can mean more gas, so add it slowly. If you take medicine or have a medical condition, the label asks you to see a physician first.
